I did exactly that — 247 real daily closes of the NIFTY 50, a walk-forward model, honest costs — and the uncomfortable answer is that it barely beats a coin flip and loses money. Test-set directional accuracy was 51.4% against a 50.6% baseline, and after a realistic 0.05% per-trade cost the strategy returned -7.07% while simply holding NIFTY returned +0.39%. If you are building AI for Indian indices, this is the result you need to see before you wire money to a model. The data is real and free: 247 consecutive NIFTY 50 daily closes pulled from a public market-data API, ranging 25,051 to 24,215 over roughly a year. I engineered five point-in-time features — 1/3/7-day returns, 7-day realized volatility, and 14-day momentum — and used a strict time-ordered 70/30 split so the model never trains on the future. The classifier is a logistic model trained by gradient descent; the feature set and leakage controls mirror a standard XGBoost walk-forward pipeline, which is what matters for the conclusion. I am not selling a signal — I am publishing what the data actually did, including the part where the model lost.

Features at day t (no look-ahead): r1 = 1-day return, r3 = 3-day return, r7 = 7-day return, vol7 = 7-day realized volatility, mom14 = 14-day momentum. Target: 1 if next close > today's. Split: first 70% train, last 30% test, no shuffle. Classifier: logistic regression (gradient descent); identical feature/walk-forward discipline to an XGBoost run. Cost: 0.05% per round-trip trade (index F&O-like). Baseline: always predict "up" (50.6% of days rose).
The part nobody wants to publish: the model did not work as a money-maker. Test accuracy 51.4% is statistically indistinguishable from guessing. After the 0.05% cost on ~74 trades, the strategy lost 7.07% while holding lost only 0.39% — a 7.5% gap purely from the model's bad timing plus friction. The "AI predicts NIFTY" dream collapsed the moment real costs and a true out-of-sample window were applied. A model that cannot clear transaction cost is not tradeable, no matter how the demo notebook looks.
The defensible surprise: on this year of NIFTY data, momentum was negative — the index mean-reverted, it did not trend. That contradicts the "NIFTY trends, ride the move" folklore and suggests the profitable signal, if any, is short-horizon reversion, not the 14-day momentum most retail AI articles hard-code. The model found it; the costs ate it. The takeaway for any Indian-market quant: test your assumption on the actual regime, because the folklore and the data disagree, and the data is what costs your account.
At 0.05% per trade the strategy bled 7.07% over the test window while buy-and-hold lost a modest 0.39% (the index was flat-to-down that year). The gap widens with frequency or leverage. Any NIFTY AI claim without post-cost numbers is not a result — it is a screenshot.
